Throat Infection, Flu or COVID? Separator Tips

🎯 “My child has a sore throat and a runny nose, but is it the flu, COVID, or just tonsillitis?”

Complaints such as fever, cough, sore throat and runny nose, which are common in children in autumn and winter, can be confused with many diseases.

In particular, the symptoms of throat infections, flu (influenza) and COVID-19 may resemble each other from time to time.

In this article, we explain the similarities and differences of these three conditions so that you can better understand the symptoms in your child, and explain when to see a doctor.

📌 Throat Infection (Pharyngitis, Tonsillitis)

• Reason:

➤ Most often viruses (adenovirus, rhinovirus), sometimes bacteria (especially group A beta hemolytic streptococcus)

• Main symptoms:

✅ Sore throat, difficulty swallowing

✅ Fever (especially if bacterial, above 38.5°C)

✅ Redness and inflammation in the tonsils

✅ Swelling in the glands in the neck

• Distinguishing feature:

➤ Bacterial cases usually do not have runny nose and cough.

➤ Runny nose and cough may accompany viral infections.

📌 Flu (Influenza)

• Reason:

➤ Influenza A and B viruses

• Main symptoms:

✅ Sudden onset of high fever (above 39°C)

✅ Headache, muscle aches, fatigue

✅ Dry cough

✅ Runny nose, sore throat

• Distinguishing feature:

➤ Systemic symptoms that often start suddenly and have a severe course are at the forefront.

➤ It spreads very quickly, especially in school-age children.

📌 COVID-19

• Reason:

➤ SARS-CoV-2 virus

• Main symptoms:

✅ Fever

✅ Cough

✅ Sore throat

✅ Headache

✅ Loss of taste and smell (especially in older children)

✅ Nausea, diarrhea (in some cases)

• Distinguishing feature:

➤ It may have a mild course, sometimes it may start with just a runny nose or abdominal pain.

➤ COVID is more likely if there is loss of taste/smell

➤ If there is a recent contact history, it should be taken into consideration
